Demographics
The United Kingdom is comprised of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and is located in Northern Europe. It comprises the island of Great Britain: England, Scotland, and Wales, and the northeastern one sixth of the island of Ireland (Northern Ireland), together with many smaller islands. The United Kingdom lies between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, and is only 22 miles from the northwest coast of France, where it is separated by the English Channel. With the new Channel tunnel, there is a direct link to France from the United Kingdom. The area comprises 243,000 square kilometers, and makes it slightly smaller than Oregon. London is the Capital city, and other major cities include Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Sheffield, Liverpool, Bradford, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, and Belfast. The people of the United Kingdom are varied and comprised mainly of: British, Irish, West Indian, and South Asian.
National Government and History
The United Kingdom is governed by the Parliament, and follows a constitutional monarchy with a Monarch, as head of state (Queen Elizabeth at present), and a Prime Minister, as head of government. In addition, there is a cabinet acting as legislators, House of Commons, House of Lords, Scottish Parliament, Welsh Assembly, and Northern Ireland Assembly. Managing the judicial branch, there are a number of levels of magistrates (judges): county, high courts, appellate courts, House of Lords.
The Roman invasion of 55 BC, and its following incorporation into the Roman Empire, stimulated development and brought more active contacts with the rest of Europe. As Rome’s strength declined, the country again was exposed to invasion – including the pivotal incursions of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes in the fifth and sixth centuries AD up until the Norman Conquest in 1066. Norman rule effectively ensured Britain’s safety from further intrusions. Both Wales, and Scotland were independent kingdoms that resisted English rule. The English conquest of Wales succeeded in 1282 under Edward I, and the Statute of Rhuddlan established English rule 2 years later. To appease the Welsh, Edward’s son, later Edward II, who had been born in Wales, was made Prince of Wales, in 1301. The tradition of bestowing this title on the eldest son of the British Monarch continues today.
While maintaining separate parliaments, England and Scotland were ruled under one crown beginning in 1603, when James VI of Scotland succeeded his cousin, Elizabeth I, as James I of England. In the ensuing 100 years, strong religious and political differences divided the kingdoms. Finally, in 1707, England and Scotland were unified as Great Britain, sharing a single Parliament at Westminster. Ireland’s invasion by the Anglo-Normans in 1170 led to centuries of strife. Successive English kings sought to conquer Ireland. In the early 17th Century, large -scale settlements of the north from Scotland and England began. After its defeat, Ireland was subjected, with varying degrees of success, to control and regulation by Britain.
Climate and Geography
As a result of its industrial history, the United Kingdom has an extensive system of canals, mostly built in the early years of the Industrial Revolution, before the rise of competition from the railways. The United Kingdom also has numerous dams and reservoirs to store water for drinking and industry. The generation of hydroelectric power is rather limited, supplying less than 2% of British electricity mainly from the Scottish Highlands.
The physical geography of the UK varies greatly. In England, the land consists of lowland terrain, with mountainous terrain north-west including the Cumbrian Mountains of the Lake District, the Pennines, and limestone hills of the Peak District, Exmoor and Dartmoor. The geography of Scotland is distinguished by the Highland Boundary Fault – a geological rock fracture- which traverses the Scottish mainland from Helensburgh to Stonehaven. In Wales, it is mainly mountainous, although south Wales is less so. In Ireland, you find the Mourne Mountains as well as Lough Neagh, which is the largest body of water in the UK and Ireland. The United Kingdom is said to be formed by the shifting of the tectonic plates and glaciation.
Economy
The United Kingdom has the fifth-largest economy in the world, is the second largest economy in the European Union, and is a major international trading power. A highly developed, diversified, market-based economy with extensive social welfare services, provides most residents with a high standard of living. Unemployment and inflation levels are amongst the lowest within the European Union. The government has responded to the turmoil in the financial markets by implementing a wide -ranging recovery plan in 2009. London remains a leading international financial center, and remains a global leader in emissions trading, and the United Kingdom remains the European Union’s only significant energy exporter.
Language
Although the official language is English, Welsh, Irish Gaelic, and Scottish Gaelic are also major languages. This cultural melting pot of the world also has many other languages spoken, and they are too numerous to include, as people continue to find their home in the United Kingdom from all over the world.
